What is a Tongue Tie?

 

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is where the piece of skin connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth is shorter or tighter than usual. This prevents the tongue having a normal and free range of motion.

Why Myofunctional Therapy Matters Before a Tongue‑Tie Release

 

1. Muscles need to be ready for new freedom

A tongue‑tie release changes structure, but it doesn’t automatically change function. Before release, the tongue and body often develops compensations — jaw tension, neck recruitment, floor‑of‑mouth bracing, or a low resting posture.

Pre‑release therapy helps:

• Build awareness of tongue movement

• Strengthen underused muscles

• Reduce overactivity in compensating muscles

• Establish correct patterns before the anatomy changes

This means the tongue is prepared to use its new range of motion immediately after release.

 

2. It stabilises breathing and oral rest posture

If someone is mouth breathing, tongue‑tied, or has poor nasal airflow, releasing the tie without addressing these foundations can create instability.

Therapy supports:

• Nasal breathing

• Lip seal

• Correct tongue resting posture

• Diaphragmatic breathing patterns

These are essential for long‑term success and prevent the tongue from “falling back” into old habits.
